Hiking to Tschafon Hut

  • Walk towards the far end of the parking lot, where the bathroom is, and exit the parking lot following the road further.
  • Continue past the hotels of Lavina Bianca, and eventually you arrive at a trail fork
  • Take trail 4A going slightly up.
  • After about 20 minutes, the forest road cuts right, but the 4A trail goes straight through a wooden gate
  • Hike up a short uphill section and the trail joins with the road again
  • In a few more minutes you arrive at a small plateau with a small house (and usually with horses and cows too). Take a right here and follow the road going up through the trees.
  • In 20 minutes, the hiking trail splits from the road to the right again. You can stay on the road all the way to the hut, but you'd be missing out.
  • If you decide to follow the trail, it goes on the right side of the road for a bit and then crosses it to the left again.
  • From there the trail continues traversing the side of the valley slightly upwards and the views really open up.
  • On your left, you'll see the hills surrounding Bolzano; behind you will be the Catinaccio Group.
  • Eventually, the trail gets a little steeper, and after a few switchbacks you find yourself at the meadows surrounding the Tschafon Hut.
  • To return, take the same trail back all the way to the parking lot in Lavina Bianca

Weather & Season

  • The majority of the trail goes through the trees, and there are no exposed sections, so it's doable in any weather.
  • There might be no views when the weather is bad, but you'll appreciate the delicious food and warm coffee at the hut all the more.

Water along the trail to Tschafon Hut

  • There's water at the trailhead and in the huts
  • We have not run into any water along the short trail.

Other notes

  • The parking lot can fill up quickly, especially on nice summer weekends. People even car camp there.
  • If you want to stay overnight, book your room in advance. The space is limited and the hut is popular.
  • We recommend checking out Monte Balzo, just 15 minutes above the hut. The panoramic views are amazing, and you can also catch the sunrise over the Catinaccio Group in the morning.
  • I've done the hike early in the morning to be at the hut in time for breakfast. It's doable but just know that the sun does not hit the trail before after 8 am so dress appropriately or hike fast to stay warm.
